Analyzing the Canucks moves at the Trade Deadline

....................

Oh yeah. They didn't make any moves.

Actually I'm pretty okay with this. The big rumour was Kevin Bieksa, Mason Raymond and a 1st-round pick to Florida for Jay Bouwmeester, which is very steep unless Bouwmeester was guaranteed to resign with the Canucks.

So standing pat, putting faith in Luongo and Co. and not giving away prominent roster players for unproven playoff-performers (cough, Calgary, cough!) seems like a decent move. It was a slow deadline, with so many teams still in playoff contention and fears of a reduced cap scaring away GMs from long-term contract commitments, so making no moves doesn't seem like the worst thing to happen.

It is, however, quite dull. So for entertainment purposes here is a SportsCentre Top 10 Own Goals. They're not all hockey, but they are all highly entertaining. Plus who can complain about seeing the infamous Steve Smith own goal one more time?

TOP 7 OLAF KOLZIG LEAF MOMENTS

1. Olaf Kolzig, 38 and on long term injury, is aquired by the Maple Leafs. Chants of 'Olie, Olie" begin outside the Air Canada Centre.

2. Kolzig learns of the trade and is heard to remark "What? You know I'm injured and retiring, right?"
A single tear rolls down Joe Bowens cheek.

3. MLSE names Kolzig the 12th best goaltender in franchise history, just behind Tom Barrasso (2 Leaf games played) and just ahead of Andrew Raycroft (2 Leaf seasons played).

4. Leaf Coach Ron Wilson asks Kolzig if he wouldn't mind playing goal "with the parts of you that aren't hurt". Kolzig cashes a $50 000 cheque and says 'fuck no'.

5. Kolzig jerseys sell like hot cakes at Leafsport, outsold only by Phil Housley and Doug Gilmour (the 2nd time) sweaters.

6. When asked how he likes his teams chances of making the playoffs this year, Kolzig replies "hey, with Green, Backstrom and Ovechkin, how can we lose? Oh shit, wait! Ask me the question again!"

7. Upon learning of Kolzig's imminent retirement, Leafs GM Brian Burke organizes an 'Olie the Goalie" ceremony for Opening night next season. Green Day will perform "Time of your Life" while a montage of Kolzig making spectuacular saves against the Leafs is shown.
